Disrupt and Refuse the Academy
The Education Graduate Students of Colour (EGSC) is a student-run collective a part of the Faculty of Education at the University of Ottawa. It is inspired by the launch of the Teacher Candidates of Colour (TCC) Collective in 2019-2020, with the aim to provide a necessary space for EGSCs while also countering and resisting the structural and systemic racism that exists in our program.
Counter NarrativesIn the winter semester, the launch of Counter Narratives is the main project. This will be a space — a meeting place of sorts — for EGSCs to publish a piece of writing.
Fall InstituteIn the fall semester, the main project is the Fall Institute, which focuses on a particular topic related to equity and justice. Please refer to the Fall Institute 2020 for details.
Solidarity Funds |
Workshops |
Solidarity funds (i.e. $100-150) are provided to EGSCs to work on individual projects related to the collective. Please reach out for more information about the availability before proposing a project.
In the Winter semester, we run several events and workshops in collaboration with other groups in our faculty, to offer graduate students opportunities for professional learning development.
The launch of the EGSC has been made possible by the funding provided by the office of the Vice-Dean, Governance and Student Affairs at the Faculty of Education.
“Contrary to what we may have been taught to think, unnecessary and unchosen suffering wounds us but need not scar us for life. What we allow the mark of our suffering to become is in our own hands.”
